Living Planet Index

Average relative change in the size of monitored vertebrate wildlife populations since 1970 (index, 1970 = 1), with 95% confidence limits: global, terrestrial, freshwater and marine, and for five IPBES regions. The 2024 edition covers 1970-2020 from 34,836 populations of 5,495 species, weighted by species richness and smoothed with a 3-year running average. It measures average population change, not the share of animals lost or a count of extinctions.
